About dementia care

Familiar surroundings can make every day calmer.

Dementia is a general term for a decline in memory, thinking, and reasoning severe enough to affect daily life. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause, but vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia are common too. Care needs vary depending on the type and stage.

At home, dementia care focuses on maintaining routine and reducing confusion. Familiar surroundings tend to lower anxiety compared to an unfamiliar setting, which is a major reason families choose in-home support. Our caregivers work within a client’s current abilities, encouraging independence where it’s still possible and stepping in with hands-on support where it’s needed.

You are not alone in this. The World Health Organization reports that 57 million people were living with dementia worldwide in 2021, and that dementia is not an inevitable part of ageing. As part of our specialized care services, PrimeCare provides non-medical dementia care across the Bay Area.

Types of dementia

Dementia looks different for every person.

Your loved one’s doctor makes the diagnosis. We shape daily care around what you tell us and what we see at home.

Alzheimer’s disease

The most common form of dementia. It often begins with trouble remembering recent events and gradually affects thinking and daily tasks. Learn about our Alzheimer’s care.

Vascular dementia

Linked to damage to the brain’s blood vessels, including after a stroke. It can show up as slower thinking or trouble with planning. Read more about vascular dementia.

Lewy body dementia

Involves abnormal protein deposits in nerve cells. It can bring changes in alertness, visual hallucinations, and movement difficulties alongside memory changes. Read more about dementia with Lewy bodies.

Frontotemporal dementia

Involves degeneration in the frontal part of the brain and often appears first as changes in behavior, personality, or language. Read more about frontotemporal dementia.

Is it time?

Signs it might be time for dementia care

  • Frequent forgetfulness that affects safety, like leaving the stove on or missing medications
  • Getting lost in familiar places
  • Difficulty managing personal hygiene or dressing
  • Wandering or attempting to leave the house unsupervised
  • Increasing isolation or withdrawal from usual activities
  • Caregiver burnout in the family member currently providing care

If even one or two apply, a free consultation can help you understand what level of support makes sense right now. Dementia care doesn’t have to mean full-time care from day one.

Not sure what you’re noticing? The Alzheimer’s Association lists 10 early signs of Alzheimer’s and dementia, and its free 24/7 Helpline (800.272.3900) can point you to local resources. Changes in memory are always worth discussing with a doctor.

What is dementia care at home?

Dementia care at home is non-medical support that helps a person living with dementia keep familiar routines, stay safe, and remain comfortable in their own home. It includes help with personal care, meals, medication reminders, mobility, companionship, and safety supervision, adapted to their abilities and preferences.

When should we consider dementia care?

Consider dementia care when forgetfulness starts to affect safety, hygiene, eating, or medications, when your loved one wanders or gets lost, or when the family caregiver is worn out. Even one or two of these signs are a good reason for a free consultation.

Is PrimeCare’s dementia care medical care?

No. PrimeCare provides non-medical care. Our caregivers help with daily living, safety, comfort, and companionship, and they work alongside your loved one’s doctors and family rather than replacing them. Diagnosis and treatment stay with their medical team.

What is the difference between dementia care and Alzheimer’s care?

Dementia is the broad term for a decline in memory and thinking, and Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause. Both call for patient, routine-based support, and we tailor the plan to the person’s diagnosis, stage, and needs. See our Alzheimer’s care page for more.

How do caregivers handle confusion, wandering, and changing moods?

Our caregivers use calm communication, consistent routines, and attentive supervision. If wandering or mood changes are a concern, tell us during the free assessment so the care plan reflects what your family sees at home.

Will the care plan change as dementia progresses?

Yes. Needs often change over time, so the plan is never fixed. We stay in regular contact with your family and update the care plan as dementia progresses.

Can we combine dementia care with overnight or respite care?

Yes. Many families combine dementia care with overnight care, respite care, or 24-hour care. During the free assessment we build one plan and schedule around your loved one’s needs.

How much does dementia care cost, and how many hours can we schedule?

Cost depends on the hours needed and level of care. PrimeCare offers flexible scheduling with a 4-hour minimum shift, from a few shifts a week up to 24-hour care. See our billing page or contact our team for a personalized quote.

Who provides dementia care at PrimeCare?

Every caregiver is a Registered Home Care Aide with the CDSS and completes fingerprinting and a full criminal background check before working with clients.

How do we get started?

Call us or request a free assessment. We visit your loved one at home, learn their needs and routines, and build a personalized care plan with no obligation.

Let’s build a care plan together.
